Second-order thinking is the act of looking past the immediate consequence of a decision to understand its subsequent effects. While first-order thinking is fast and easy (e.g. "I'm hungry, let's eat a donut"), second-order thinking is complex and rewarding (e.g. "If I eat a donut, my energy will crash in an hour"). Always ask: "And then what?"
